About Tony Kirkland
Author of journey to the stream
I grew up on the mean streets of Harlem, New York City, which gave me street smarts. Harlem had a very strong community at the time, in addition to its rougher side, and I learned from both. As much as I appreciated the lessons, I never really felt that was my place. Instead, I always saw a better life for myself, and the degree of suffering and destruction scared me enough to know I never wanted to live a life like that. I felt that no one should live a life like that, so I decided at the age of 14 I was going to become a psychotherapist. I didn’t plan to be just any psychotherapist, but the best in the world: the Michael Jordan of psychotherapists. I worked tirelessly on this goal from the age of 14, working as a CIT (Counselor in Training) for the YMCA in New York. I became a camp counselor, taught new counselors, and even briefly became
I became a therapist and had a very successful private practice in New York City. Over the years, in working with clients, I found the classic model of psychology to be too limiting, so I became a coach. I did that for another 15 years and over time developed a whole new method, called Structural AlignmentTM.
Structural AlignmentTM came about because I was working through my own personal struggles, and none of the things I tried was really working for me anymore. I’d become overly coached or overly counseled: I’d become a terrible patient. Self-analysis, psychotherapy, the forum, EFT, you name it—nothing worked for me. You could say that Structural AlignmentTM was developed because I needed to invent my own cure! This was the only process that was smarter than I was. I couldn’t out-maneuver it; I had to surrender. This is still a journey for me because I often want to take control again. Then I’m reminded of the folly of that strategy…. Today I teach coaches in the Structural AlignmentTM method at SAcoaching.com. If this is something you might be interested in exploring for yourself or your company, drop me a line at Tony@SAcoaching.com. With this book, I invite you to take your own journey, and I’d love to hear from you about it.
